PANAJI: Arnold Rodrigues, Roopchandra Humraskar, Tanaji Sawant, Sandhya Melasheemi, Supriya Pai Kuchelkar and Marina Albuquerque bagged double crown each at the State Masters Badminton Ranking Tournament organised by Panjim Panthers Club under the aegis of Goa Badminton Association, in collaboration with Sports Authority of Goa at indoor stadium, Campal.
The two-day tournament that concluded on Sunday; saw singles, doubles and mixed-doubles events in the age-group categories of 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+. Over 150 masters shuttlers from all over Goa took part in the tournament, which served as selection trials for the Masters Nationals.
In one of the most competitive men’s age-group events, Arnold Rodrigues won the 45+ category singles title with an impressive 21-18, 21-10 victory over Shamsudeen C.K. Earlier, he partnered Krishnaprasad Naik to beat Gurpreet Singh/Nilesh Naik 21-19, 18-21, 21-10 in the hard-fought doubles final.
Among the women’s finals, national medallist Sandhya Melasheemi inflicted a crushing 21-6, 21-6 defeat on to Betty Dourado in 35 + singles event. She was also the winner of the mixed doubles category, where she partnered Vishal Vernekar to overcome a stiff resistance by Kamlesh Kanji/Betty Dourado 21-14, 24-22.
