Asmita Ray of Mormugao Taluka Chess Association won the Late Shripad & Anusuya Kamat Tarcar Memorial Women’s State Chess Championship-cum-Selection tournament 2024 at Mahalaxmi Vachan Mandir Hall, Mala-Panaji.
The tournament was well-contested with eventual winner Asmita, who trailed by half-a-point, beating overnight leader Tanvi Hadkonkar to bag the title.
Asmita, who had recently played in World Junior Chess Championship held in Gujarat, scored 6 points from 7 rounds.
WCM Gunjal Chopdekar finished second while Tanvi Hadkonkar stood third even as six players were locked on identical tally of 5.5 points each. Tie-break score decided the podium placings.
The prize-winners from 4th to 10th place are as follows: Rachel Pereira, WCM Swera Braganca, Lyia Silveira, Shriya Patil, Alana Andrade , Sani Gawas and Saeeja Dessai; all scoring 5 points each.
The first-4 players will represent Goa at the National Championship to be held from 3rd to 13th October 2024 in Tamil Nadu.
Tournament sponsor Chaitanya Tarcar was the chief guest and distributed the prizes in the presence of Narayan Pednekar, Ashesh Keni, Dattaram Pinge, Arvind Mhamal, Satyawan Harmalkar, Pallavi Kakodkar, Atish Angle and others.
