The gathering of designers and creative professionals hosted by the Creative Community of Goa (CCG), organised by the SITPC, Department of IT, and Electronics and Communications, met with designers of Goa recently to discuss the possibility of a Design Policy with the Minister for Tourism, Information Technology, Electronics and Communications, Rohan A. Khaunte.
Detailed plans were laid out by the government through a presentation made by D. S. Prashant, CEO of the Startup & IT Promotion Cell, and initiated a thought-provoking conversation about how this narrative could be developed and achieved.
The discussion during the meet-up delved deeply into the requirements for realising the vision, thoroughly examining the progress achieved, ongoing initiatives, requirements, a detailed plan and timeline, and prospective objectives for both the short-term and long-term.
Participants including Mridula Sharma, Author and Interior Stylist, Founder & Former Editor-in-charge of Livigenetic India shared insights on considering the establishment of libraries or labs dedicated to the design community, Elizabeth Kurian, an architect, emphasized the importance of incorporating design education into the school curriculum, Shyam Pahapalkar, a Freelance Artist, expressed thoughts on outreach to the tribal community to integrate them into the design space, and addressing various related topics.
The discussion was graced by the President of the Association of Designers of India Jacob Samuel and highlighted his collaboration with the Government of Karnataka to turn Bengaluru into the World Design Protopolis. It became the first city globally to embrace this initiative, showcasing the collective efforts of the design community, institutions, government, and civil society.
In his address, Rohan A. Khaunte stated: “The Creative Community of Goa (CCG) has taken a crucial step towards realizing our vision of making Goa the Design Capital of India. The ‘Viksit Bharat 2024’ agenda by Prime Minister Modi is a comprehensive vision plan to transform India into a developed nation by 2047. We are actively taking this vision forward through various initiatives. The government aims to capitalise on human resources through the Global Opportunities Aggregator (GOA) initiative, empowering our creative minds with access to facilities, mentorship, and collaborative opportunities. Looking to the future, infrastructure development is a key focus, and the Electronic Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) at Tuem holds the potential to mark the establishment of a Design Village, further contributing to the growth and recognition of Goa as a thriving creative center.”
Designers, architects, artists, craftsmen, and individuals from diverse creative fields were invited to join the successful journey of building the formal Creative Community of Goa (CCG). The meeting ended with a promise to meet once every month with measurable goals on the outcomes of the discussions and process.
