FIDE U-10 WORLD CUP: GOA’S ETHAN VAZ BAGS SILVER MEDAL, QUALIFIES FOR SUPER FINALS

PANAJI: AIM Ethan Vaz (1384 Elo) had to be content with the Silver Medal at World Cup 2021 as the talented Goan couldn’t conquer Under-10 chess World No1, CM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus of Turkey (2150 Elo); according to a press communique by Goa Chess Association.

Ethan, who will celebrate his 10th birthday on September 3rd, shall be awarded a Diploma by FIDE and also the rights to a direct entry into the most prestigious event, the World Cup 2021 Super Finals that is scheduled to be held in December this year, stated the press communique.

”In the World Cup, Ethan caused upsets of as many as 13 higher-rated opponents, including 3 Candidate Masters (CMs). His best victory was against a 2168 Elo rated CM in the Under-12 World Cup Selection stage,” explained Ethan’s coach, Prakash Singh of Chess Guru Goa Academy. “We were aiming for Gold right from day one of the Final stage, and I was looking forward to Ethan becoming the World Champion,” he said, expressing confidence in Ethan’s skills and talent.

“Representing India at the World Cup and coming within arm’s reach of becoming the World Champion has been a thrilling and enriching experience for Ethan as well as for all of us,” expressed Ethan’s parents, Edwin Vaz and Linda Fernandes.

Ethan hails from the village of Raia. He is a student of The King’s School, Sao Jose de Areal.
