Redesignated from a Gym Instructor to a Weightlifting Coach in Sports Authority of Goa, the former Goan star bodybuilder Mahesh Kavlekar will be a happy man now. As goes the idiom ‘better late than never’, the NIS Diploma-holder weightlifting coach of academic year 2012 – 13, finally seems to have got his due from the state government under the leadership of Sports Minister Govind Gaude at the SAG Annual General body Meeting on Tuesday.
Mahesh Kavlekar dominated Goan bodybuilding circuit for many years and even hogged the limelight at the national level when he finished 4th at Mr India competition in Delhi in 2017. A ‘Best Poser’ at national-level bodybuilding competition ‘Pune Shree’ in 2018, winning the 3rd-place in 75kg category, had placed Mahesh at the peak of his popularity in Goa. He has the distinction of winning ‘Iron Man’ title in weightlifting seven times while being the overall Champion of Champions’ at the state level for nine times.
It was undoubtedly a considerate way of putting the wrongs right and credit to the Sports Minister and SAG Executive Director Dr. Geeta Nagvenkar for taking up Mahesh’s redesignation as a ‘special case’ for the illustrious career he had that brought glory to the state of Goa.
