Following the recent incident concerning Nerul Paradise, the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, is deeply concerned about the safety of tourists and residents alike. This incident has prompted a comprehensive review of existing safety protocols and measures. As part of its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals enjoying Goa’s coastal waters, ‘Goa Tourism’ is announcing a new mandatory registration requirement for all boats operating in these waters. This initiative aims to enhance the monitoring and regulation of maritime activities, ensuring that all vessels meet stringent safety standards. The mandatory registration will include detailed safety inspections, verification of compliance with maritime regulations, and mandatory safety drills for crew members. By instituting these enhanced safety protocols, Goa Tourism seeks to reassure the public of its dedication to maintaining Goa as a safe and enjoyable destination for all, states a press release.

Minister of Tourism, Rohan A Khaunte said: “The Department of Tourism has issued a directive requiring all watersports boats to obtain a NOC from the Department before seeking NOC from the Captain of Ports (COP). Unfortunately, compliance has been lacking. Calangute beach is already overwhelmed with watersports activities, leaving no room for additional operations. The incident that occurred yesterday serves as a critical reminder that the responsibility lies with the Captain of Ports. Therefore, all associations must submit their data, and strict actions will be taken against those operating without the Tourism Department’s NOC, as they jeopardise the safety of our guests.”

The Department of Tourism has issued a formal notice to all watersports operators stating that possessing an NOC from the Tourism Department is mandatory to operate boats. Non-compliance will result in stringent measures. For those with both the Tourism and COP NOCs, the NIWS will conduct an audit to reassess carrying capacity and issue new permissions before the forthcoming season.

“We are taking decisive action to protect everyone who enjoys our beautiful coastal areas,” said Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director of Tourism and Managing Director of GTDC. “Implementing the mandatory registration for all boats stands as a pivotal measure in our efforts to bolster the supervision and regulation of water-based activities. By enforcing stringent safety protocols, we aim to uphold the highest standards of security for all those who partake in the vibrant recreational offerings along our shores. Our unwavering dedication persists in fostering an environment where both visitors and residents can revel in the splendor of our coastal treasures without compromising their safety. The mandatory registration of all boats will enable us to more effectively monitor and regulate water activities, ensuring that safety protocols are rigorously adhered to. Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of all who visit and reside in Goa.”

Effective immediately, all boats operating in Goa’s coastal areas must be registered with the Department of Tourism. This initiative highlights the department’s unwavering commitment to enhancing safety standards and preventing future incidents. By enforcing this registration requirement, the Department of Tourism aims to strengthen oversight and accountability within the maritime tourism sector. Failure to comply with this mandate will result in severe consequences, including hefty fines of up to 1 lakh rupees and potential debarment from operating in Goa’s waters. These stringent measures are designed to ensure that all maritime activities adhere to the highest safety protocols, safeguarding the well-being of tourists and residents alike.

Furthermore, the Department of Tourism extends their encouragement to all boat operators and tour providers to uphold safety as their foremost priority and to diligently adhere to every regulatory stipulation. The Department of Tourism remains steadfast in its unwavering commitment to fostering an environment characterized by safety and enjoyment for all visitors to the enchanting shores of Goa. Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders, the aim is to instill a culture of vigilance and compliance, thereby enhancing the overall experience for tourists while safeguarding their interests. Rest assured, the Department of Tourism remains vigilant and proactive in its endeavors, standing as a beacon of assurance for all those who choose to explore the scenic wonders of Goa’s coastal regions.
