GOAN HOCKEY LEGENDS FELICITATED ON OPENING DAY OF SUB-JUNIOR NATIONALS

PEDDEM (MAPUSA): Hockey legends from Goa, who went on to play for India at the Olympics, World Cup, Asian championships; were felicitated during the inaugural ceremony of 12th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men’s National Championship at the Astro Turf, Peddem Sports Complex, here in North Goa on Wednesday.

Joaquim Carvalho, Merwyn Fernandes, Darryl D’Souza, Clarence Lobo, Selma D’Silva, Eliza Nelson Britto and Loretta Fernandes were part of the elite personalities recognised for their valuable service to the sport.

The youngsters in attendance at the sub-junior nationals, especially the hosts boys playing in the first-ever national competition at home on the newly-laid AstroTurf, would draw tremendous inspiration from the legendary Goan hockey players of the yesteryears.

Puneet Goel, (IAS) Chief Secretary, Govt. of Goa, was the chief guest and in the presence of Sports Secretary, Ajit Roy felicitated the former players. President of Goans Hockey, Xavier Marquis; Vice-President of Goans Hockey, Farell Furtado and secretary Benny Viegas were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Puneet expressed happiness in admiration of the AstroTurf facility, which has been developed as part of the National Games infrastructure. He also stated that Goa government will do more for the growth of hockey in the state.

Meanwhile, the hosts will open their campaign in the competition with a clash against Delhi, on Thursday at 1.30pm.
