ICAR-CCARI Goa organised a two-day Training-cum-Demonstration programme on “Scientific Pig Farming” under the Tribal Sub-Plan of AICRP on Pig, in which 19 participants from Palghar district of Maharashtra took part.
In the inaugural address, Dr. A. Raizada, Director in-charge, highlighted about different aspects of scientific pig farming that can be profitable to farmers by adopting the low-cost rearing practices. He emphasised that farmers should join as a group and explore the marketing avenues for sale of live pigs and pork.
An extension folder on scientific pig farming in Marathi language was released. Dr. Shirish D. Narnaware, Senior Scientist (Section in-charge, Animal and Fisheries Science) briefed the participants about the organised commercial piggery farming and health care measures to be followed to avoid onset of emerging diseases in the flock. Various lectures were delivered on breeds of pig and breeding practices, management of newborn piglets, housing, feeding, reproductive care, stress management, health care and disease prevention, integrated farming with pig components, processing and marketing of pork by the scientists of the institute.
Hands-on training was given on deworming, vaccination, feed preparation, castration, semen collection and artificial insemination. An interactive session was also conducted with the scientists and farmer trainees.
Piglets, pig feed and one extension folder on scientific pig farming in Marathi language were distributed to these scheduled tribe beneficiaries.
Dr. Amiya Ranjan Sahu (PI, AICRP on Pig), Dr. Gokuldas P.P (Senior Scientist) and Dr. Sanjaykumar Udharwar (SMS, Animal Science) coordinated the training programme held recently. Samradni Rohit Paigankar and Kiran Hangaragi (YPs) were associated with registration of participants and other activities during the training and distribution of inputs.
