PANAJI: Special Olympics Bharat-Goa in collaboration with Goa Badminton Association and the Sports Authority of Goa, organised a one-day camp, ‘Introduction of Badminton’ to Special Olympics athletes at Indoor stadium Campal.
Goa Badminton Association (GBA) deputed 5 of its coaches – Arjun Chauhan, Anup Kushwaha, Dhananjay Sirsat, Shridhar Gosavi and Avdhut Saptoji, to conduct the camp, which was held over 3 sessions.
Physical Education Teachers from various institutions, assisted in conducting the camp. In all, 28 children with special needs from various parts of Goa, participated in the day-long camp, which included fitness training sessions, on-court sessions and a session on inclusive participation where the Special Olympics children played alongside regular trainees giving them a fun-filled experience.
“The Special Olympics Bharat- Goa has joined hands with Goa Badminton Association to enhance the badminton experience for children with special needs and to fulfill our mission of creating inclusiveness via sports for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities,” stated Victor Vaz, National Sports Director for Special Olympics Bharat.
“It was a wonderful experience for all of us to engage in badminton activities with the special athletes. Such camps for longer durations at regular basis will be held and during the coming months, we have planned a range of collaborative activities between our State Association and the Special Olympics Bharat,” GBA Secretary Sandeep Heble added.
Monica Dourado, Project Officer, SAG and Albert Dourado, co-ordinator for SAG, who graced the closing ceremony of the camp, provided information about the various SAG schemes for children with special needs and asked the Institutions to avail the benefits of the scheme. They hailed SAG Executive Director, VM Prabhudesai for constant support. Certificates of merit were awarded to all participants.
