St. Joseph Vaz College Library celebrated National Librarians Day on 12th August 2023 with great enthusiasm and respect to pay tribute to Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science on his 131st birth anniversary.
Administrator, Rev. Prof. Simão Diniz, delivered an inspirational speech underlining the significance of libraries as reservoirs of knowledge and their contribution to molding the future of education. He also emphasised the role of librarians in cultivating a passion for learning and critical thinking abilities among students.
The college librarian, Manali Acharya discussed Dr. S.R. Ranganathan’s revolutionary principles in library science, including the Five Laws and Colon Classification, which have transformed library management worldwide.
Beyond the speeches, the event comprised competitions such as debates on “Digital reading vs Physical reading”, elocution competitions on “The role of libraries in fostering a culture of lifelong learning” and “Libraries: The Pillars of Knowledge and Empowerment”, and poster-making competitions on the theme “Libraries: Where imagination soars and dreams take flight”.
Principal, Dr. Maria Fonseca expressed gratitude to all esteemed guests and attendees for contributing to the remarkable success of the National Librarians Day celebration.
The event consisted of three competitions namely Elocution, where Juvency Simoes took the top spot, followed by Muskaan Kumari in second place, and Neha Panday in third place. The Debate, was won by participants from Group 1: Natasha Nadaf, Muskan Kumari, Juvency Simoes, and Sheraine Andrade; and the Poster Making contest saw victories by the teams of Chhavi Singh and Flossy Lucas, Nasreen Chalwadi and Ishwari Navrekar, and Pavithra Nair and Srushti Nair, respectively. These events served a dual purpose – honoring the legacy of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan and acknowledging the vital role libraries play in shaping young minds and nurturing a passion for reading.
Meanwhile, college librarian Manali Acharya recently presented a paper at the National Seminar themed ‘Digital and Virtual Libraries: Transforming Libraries & Information Services’ organised by Krishnadas Shama Goa State Central Library in Panaji. Her research paper is titled Smart Libraries: Harnessing Technology for Enhanced user Experience and Services.
