Under the aegis of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, Ministry of Culture has collaborated with the Art of Living Foundation and launched a campaign ‘Har Ghar Dhyan’. St Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim-Goa, conducted a one-hour session on meditation and mental health for their staff and students on 14th March.

In his address, Rev. Fr. Bolmax Pereira, Assistant Professor, advised on importance of yoga and meditation for improving our health.

Resource persons, Shraddha Parab and Vaishnavi Parab started the session with some simple warm-up exercises and then showed how to perform ‘Bhastrika pranayama’. Regular practice of Bhastrika pranayama helps to manage anxiety and help to relax the body and mind. It also improves the lung and heart functions. It reduces blood pressure and improves heart health and blood circulation. Everyone participated in a 20-minute meditation session during which they also emphasised the significance of daily meditation and how it can improve your work performance. According to research, meditation helps one to focus, and multi-task better. Meditation increases productivity by allowing us to focus on the here and now and by clearing our minds also reduces the chance of depression.

Principal of the college, Prof. Maria Fonseca shared her insightful comments, emphasising that yoga is a complementary medicine and urging the audience to occasionally do breathing exercises and meditate.
