Director of Agriculture, Nevil Alphonso has emphasised that the department is promoting technologies to boost mango production in the state. He spoke to LiveNewsGoa.Com, ahead of the Mango show to be held on 17th & 18th May 2024 in Panaji.

Live News Goa: What is the approximate volume of Mangoes grown in Goa in terms of quantity and area under cultivation?                

Nevil Alphonso : The cultivation area for Mangoes comes to around 5,071 hectares and annual production is 10,800 tonnes.The native Goan varieties commonly grown in Goa are Malcorado (Mankurad), Alphonso, Mossurad Salcete, Mossurad Bardez, Fernandin, Hilario and Furtado. The other Indian variety grown in Goa are Kesar, Totapuri, Ratna, Mallika and Amrapali.          

Live News Goa : In terms of climate change, what are the challenges Mango farmers face in Goa?              

Nevil Alphonso: Erratic weather patterns including unseasonal rains and increase in temperature affects the Mango production.

Nevil Alphonso : By practicing, the recommended technologies can help the Goan farmers to increase the Mango production.         

About Goa Mango show 2024: The show would facilitate the integrated approach to increase the area under Mango, quality production and marketing with the ultimate objective of ensuring the remunerative returns to the farmers. The show will feature a display of different varieties of mangoes cultivated in the state, demonstrations, workshops and seminar on various mango production technologies, marketing and other aspects of mango production.

Competitions of Mango fruits from various varieties, hybrid, sucking varieties (Ghontam), exotic and other Indian varieties will be held. Any farmer or individual or non- governmental institutions having mango trees grown in the state of Goa are eligible to participate in the display and competitions. Certificates will be presented to all the participants. The competition for fruits and Mango value-added products (pickles, jams, juices, leather etc) will also form the part of the show.
