TOKYO 2020 INDIA ROUNDUP: MIRABAI CHANU BAGS SILVER MEDAL; WINNING START FOR SUMIT NAGAL’S TENNIS CAMPAIGN

PANAJI: Mirabai Chanu bagged India’s first medal of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with the 26-year-old clinching Silver medal in Weightlifting. She becomes only the second Indian weightlifter ever to win an Olympics medal.

Mirabai Chanu managed a total lift of 202 kgs (87kgs in snatch + 115 kgs in clean and jerk). She finished behind Olympic champion Hou Zhihui of China, who set an Olympic record with a lift of 210 kgs (94+116).

In tennis, India’s Sumit Nagal began his campaign with a 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-4 win over Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin. Nagal’s win was the first for an Indian men’s singles tennis player at the Olympics since Leander Paes’ bronze medal-winning run at Atlanta 1996.

Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary advanced to the final of the men’s 10m air pistol event. He finished top of the qualifying rounds with 586 in his 60 shots. However, Abhishek Verma missed out on a final spot after ending 17th with a total of 575. Only the top eight progress to the final.

In men’s hockey, India staved off late pressure to beat New Zealand 3-2 in a Pool A match to begin their campaign on a winning note.

In badminton, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won a close contest against higher-ranked Chinese Taipei pair of Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin 21-16, 16-21, 27-25 in their first Group A match of men’s doubles event. Meanwhile, B Sai Praneeth suffered an upset defeat against world No. 47 Misha Zilberman of Israel.
