PANAJI: Victor Hospital’s Cardiothoracic Surgery department headed by Dr. Shanmukh Hiremath, a full-time Senior Consultant and Cardiothoracic Vascular & Transplant Surgeon, is one of the premier heart specialty centres in the country. As one of the very few specialised units in Goa, the hospital routinely performs Total Arterial Coronary Artery Bypass surgeries and Redo Bypass surgeries. The Cardio Vascular Surgery Department is specifically responsible for the treatment of aneurysms, arterial blocks, peripheral vascular blocks, etc.
As heart disease and heart attacks increase, they are becoming more complex with weak heart. A long-term cure for heart attacks will improve the quality of life of the patient and family. Despite very high-risk factors and other associated deadly diseases, bypass surgery is definitively effective in treating heart-attacks.
The cardiac department of Victor Hospital specialises in these types of surgery. Out of all the patients who underwent bypass surgery for weak hearts at Victor Hospital, four were suffering from other severe diseases. Observations revealed that one patient, a 70 year old male, had a 15% ejection fraction which limited his daily activities. He would get chest pain with mild exertion and was at risk of one more heart attack which could have been fatal or even may have required a heart transplant which is extremely difficult.
The next patient had a left main coronary block with only one functioning kidney. Patients with weak hearts will have sub-optimal kidney function, so the single kidney was preserved during the operation and in the postoperative period.
The third patient presented with myasthenia gravis and hyperthyroidism which results in extreme muscle weakness, especially after anesthesia. Weaning these patients from ventilators is challenging. Similarly, another patient, 72-years-old, had both coronary blocks and a damaged aortic valve, requiring bypass surgery and valve replacement.
It is common for patients with many high-risk factors to avoid bypass surgery. All four patients recovered completely after receiving excellent care at Victor Hospital, including well-planned surgeries, pre-operative preparations and multidisciplinary postoperative treatment. Dr. Shanmukh Hiremath: “they need personalized care along with medication and procedures.”
These surgeries were a groundbreaking step toward improving the lives of patients with fragile hearts. It represents the highest standard of clinical care. Furthermore, the hospital staff trains patients’ families to care for them at home, making it an ideal patient-centered facility.
Victor Hospital is privileged to be associated with the Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojana (DDSSY), which covers a wide range of medical procedures, and a large number of patients have already been treated under this program at Victor Hospital. A key priority of Victor Hospital is the pursuit of continuous quality improvement in both patient safety and the quality of care provided.
