Higher Secondary School Physical Education Teachers Association organised a one-day seminar on Role of Sports and New Education
Policy, at Old Goa on Tuesday.

Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, Dr
Ajay Gaude reflected on the necessity to groom Physical Education Teachers into the mould of being scouts.

“The PE teachers will teach and not train in the classrooms. You can then identify talents and take them for training… you must have a database of the students’ performance to spot those with high potential,” asserted the director, who added that the government is looking to conceptualise new school events with an eye on identifying young talents who could be groomed with the 2036 Olympics in mind. He also announced that PE teachers state awards will be revamped.

Retired HSS PE teachers were also felicitated on the occasion, at the hands of Dr Gaude, who urged the teachers to pen their struggles from the good old days when infrastructure was not even basic; yet these teachers motivated their students to excel in the field of sports.

Earlier,  Dr. Pawan Dwivedi of Parul University advised the gathering on various qualities required to
become effective teachers. The Baroda-based educationist underlined the significance of family support and mentoring for the students.

Dr. Pawan also highlighted the need to grow reading habit in order to stay abreast with latest demands of
the technology that changes with times.

Senior sports journalist Jovito Lopes emphasised on the need to widen the scope as the N.E.P demands a bigger role from the Physical Education Teachers.

All Goa Physical Education Teachers Association president Chetan Kavlekar and his team displayed  determination to march forward in the face of the challenges posed by NEP.
