PANAJI: Sport Climbing will make its first appearance in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, fuelling the interest levels in the sport across the globe including in Goa.
Sport Climbing is being practiced in Goa with ‘Adventure Breaks’ first setting up a 20-feet Climbing wall at Campal here, three years ago.
‘Adventure Breaks’ also offers rock climbing on sea-side cliffs and boulders at Agonda Beach in Canacona.
“The Olympic debut has already galvanised sport climbing in advanced countries. Climbing gyms, which are big warehouses with climbing walls and bouldering walls, are now set up in most cities in Europe, the US, Singapore, China, Australia and New Zealand. Delhi has an ultra-modern climbing gym as well as the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) climbing wall. Bengaluru has a number of climbing walls. It is time for Goa to set up a world class wall,” feels Ashwin Tombat, Director, Adventure Breaks.
Meanwhile according to olympics.com, the sport climbing event will take place from 3 to 6 August 2021. Sport climbing was first included at the Youth Olympic Games in 2018 in Buenos Aires, where it proved successful and the arrival on the biggest stage, is expected to be even more captivating!
