Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai’s 212th book ‘Basic Structure and Republic’ was released at the hands of Mar Joseph Perumthottam, the Archbishop of Changanacherry (Kerala); at Raj Bhavan, Dona Paula, on Tuesday.

Minister for Water Resource Development, Co-Operation and Provedoria – Subhash Shirodkar; Rajya Sabha MP Sadananad Tanavade; Vice-Chancellor of Goa University, Prof Harilal Menon were also present.

The 50-page book emphasises on importance of political awareness via the Governor’s speeches, which delve into the fundamental rights and judiciary in particular.

The first chapter features the ‘Kesavananda Bharati Case’ which the author considers as a safety valve for the Parliament Democracy. The case, which was decided by the Supreme Court in 1973, is still followed as epoch-making judgement in the judicial history of the country.

The second article in the book is based on the Goa Governor’s speech on the Republic Day. The third and final chapter is his speech on National Voters Day.
