A record number of participants have registered across various categories for the upcoming 8th edition of the Gadre Gaspar Dias Open 2023, a state level tennis tournament, which begins at the Clube Gaspar Dias in Miramar from January 26, states a press release.
In all, 386 tennis players have registered for the event, out of which 199 have registered under the veterans category, while 187 players have registered for the open category. In 2022, 340 participants had registered for the tournament.
Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias, Goa’s first tennis club along with the Gadre Group has partnered with the Goa State Tennis Association, to organise the annual tournament.
The categories in the veterans’ segment are veteran singles 45+, veteran singles 55+, veteran singles 60+, veteran doubles 90+ (minimum age 35 years), veteran doubles 110 + (min age 45 yrs) and veteran doubles 120+ (min age 45 yrs). The 8th edition of the Gadre Gaspar Dias Open 2023 will also witness the introduction of the veterans 35+ mixed doubles category, for which eight teams have registered so far.
The open category includes six sub-categories which are under-12 (girls and boys), under-16 (girls and boys), mixed doubles, men’s singles, men’s doubles and ladies singles.
“The eighth edition of the Gadre Gaspar Dias Open 2023 has received an encouraging response. It is the tournaments such as these which inculcate and further the passion for the sports among youngsters as well as among veteran players,” Rajendra Godinho, secretary of the Goa State Tennis Association said.
“We have been associated with the Gadre Gaspar Dias Open 2023 for several years now. It is our endeavour to make this tournament a regular fixture in India’s tennis calendar,” said Arjun Gadre, owner of the tournament’s main sponsor, the Gadre Group.
The tournament’s open category matches will begin on January 30 and conclude on February 5, while matches in the veterans’ category will begin on January 26 and conclude on January 29.
