Goa University women’s football team won the prestigious West Zone Inter University Football Women Championship 2024-25, organised by Vardhman Mahaveer Open University, Kota, from 7th to 11th December 2024.
In the play-off match, Goa University registered a 4-1 victory over Pool A winners Shivaji University, Kolhapur. Karen Estrocio scored a hat-trick while the other goal came from Sushmita Yadav.
Goa University has thus booked its spot in the All India Inter-University Championship to be held at GNA University, Phagwara, Punjab from 11th to 16th January.
Karen Estrocio was named the Player of the match. Best Goalkeeper of the Championship award was given to Lysandra Rodrigues; while Aniella Barreto was named the Best Forward. Goa University team also won the Championship’s Fair Play award.
Earlier in the tournament, Goa University won against Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University (HNGU), Gujarat 3-0 in the first league match. Karen Estrocio, Blessica Rodrigues and Rizella Almeida scored a goal each for Goa University. The player of the match was awarded to Aaroshi Govekar. In their second match, Goa University beat the University of Mumbai, Mumbai 2-0. Karen Estrocio and Aaroshi Govekar were the goal-scorers. Player of the match was awarded to Vanisha Vaz.
In the last league match, which was a must-win to win the championship, Goa University won 2-0 against Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior. Aniela Barretto and Rizella Almeida were on target. Rizella Almeida was named Player of the match.
