Industries Minister, Mauvin Godinho visited the ‘Woow Plant’ to finalise the date for the second-phase inauguration, which will mark the expansion of the 5 TPD biogas plant. The Minister also inspected the ongoing work and reviewed key aspects of the project at Chicalim, Vasco.

Prasiddh Naik, Dy. Director of Panchayats, Aishwarya Korgaonkar, Acting Sarpanch, Rajat Parsekar, Secretary, VP Chicalim; Gaurav Pokle, MD YIMBY, were also present.

Wealth out of Waste (WOOW) plant, which was made operational on 2nd August 2023, effectively manages both solid and liquid waste. The plant caters to three villages Chicalim, Dabolim and Sao Jacinto Island.

Spread across 5000 square metres, the facility is equipped with a 5-ton per day biogas plant; a plastic waste management unit (PWMU) complete with a bailing machine, shredder, and a manual forklift; a material recovery facility (MRF), a sewage treatment plant (STP); a faecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP); a round the clock CCTV; and a weighing bridge to quantify the waste coming into the plant.

A 150 square metre area within the Chicalim waste management plant, is earmarked for treating solid waste.  Non-biodegradable waste is first separated into different types at the Material Recovery Facility shed and plastic waste is sent to the plastic waste management unit.   Plastic that can be used as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is transported to the cement facility for further processing. On the other hand, wet waste is transferred to the biogas plant where it is combined with water and deposited into a digester to produce gas that is used to generate electricity.

Thereafter, the leftover slurry is processed in the effluent treatment plant (ETP), and the organic manure generated is used as fertilizer.  Around 300 to 350 units of electricity generated is used to light up the entire plant. Suction tankers are used to collect wastewater from various villages, and the waste is treated to create reusable water that is used for gardening at the Joggers Park. The FSTP with a capacity of 40 KLD and STP with a capacity of 30 KLD, are equipped to scientifically manage liquid waste.
