PANAJI: St Xavier’s College-Mapusa emerged champions in the men’s and women’s section at the 1st State Inter-College Handball Championships organised by Goa Handball Association in collaboration with Nirmala Institute of Education, Govt. College Borda, St. Joseph Vaz College-Cortalim and MES College Zuarinagar under the aegis of ACDOPEG recently. A total of 20 teams participated in the men’s event, while 11 teams participated in the women’s category.
St. Xavier’s College defeated Don Bosco College-Panaji in the men’s final. Earlier, they beat MES College in the semi-final while Don Bosco College got the better of Damodar College. MES College and Shree Damodar College-Margao finished in a joint-third position.
St. Xavier’s College also topped the Women’s section as they beat Rosary College, Navelim in the title clash. Earlier in the first semi-final, St Xavier’s College overcame the challenge of VM Salgaocar College. In the other semis, Rosary College-Navelim defeated Govt. College Pernem. Govt. College Pernem and VM Salgaocar college finished joint-third.
President of Goa Handball Association, Rupesh Mahatme was the chief guest for the closing ceremony of the event and gave away the prizes in the presence of Dr Manasvi Kamat – Principal of MES College, Prof. Dr. Maria Fonseca – Principal of St. Joseph Vaz College-Cortalim, Dr. Allan Abreu – Coordinator, D.EL.ED , at St. Joseph Vaz Institute of Education; Dr. Francis Lobo, DPES of Rosary College and chairperson of competition committee of the ACDOPEG; Minguel Martins, Associate professor in Mathematics of Govt College, Borda; Dr. Satyawan Harmalkar, DPES, Zantye College; Joslyn D’Souza- DPES St Xavier’s College, Mapusa; among others.
Among individual prizes presented, Ritesh Sangelkar of St Xavier’s College and Meliza Pinto of Rosary College, were named player-of-the final in men and women category respectively; Player of the tournament: Styran Fernandes of Don Bosco College & Veena Naik of St Xavier’s College. Best goalkeeper: Dharma Toraskar & Flavina Rodrigues (both of St Xavier’s College).
