We live in a world where information is available instantly. A few taps on a smartphone can answer questions, connect us with people across continents, and provide access to an endless stream of content. While technology has undoubtedly transformed our lives for the better, it has also brought with it a new challenge that is the constant competition for our attention.
Many of us begin and end our day with a screen. Notifications, social media updates, short videos, and endless scrolling often fill the small gaps in our daily routines. In the midst of this digital abundance, one important habit is gradually being pushed aside is reading.
Reading is more than a pastime infact it is a gateway to knowledge, imagination, empathy, and personal growth. Unlike the rapid consumption of digital content, reading encourages us to slow down, think deeply, and engage with ideas in a meaningful way. Whether it is a novel, a biography, a research article, or a newspaper, reading enriches our understanding of the world and helps us become more informed and reflective individuals.
Studies have consistently shown that reading improves concentration, strengthens memory, enhances vocabulary, and reduces stress. For students, it develops critical thinking and academic excellence. For working professionals, it supports lifelong learning and informed decision-making. For senior citizens, it keeps the mind active and engaged. Simply put, reading remains one of the most valuable habits a person can cultivate, regardless of age.
As we observe National Reading Month (19th June – 18th July), it is an opportune time to reflect on our reading habits and consider how we spend our time in an increasingly digital world. Reading Month is not merely a celebration of books but it is a reminder of the importance of making space for thoughtful learning, creativity, and self-discovery.
As a step towards fostering a reading culture, the Department of Library, St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim Goa, in collaboration with the National Digital Library of India (NDLI), will organize a State-Level Digital Detox Challenge on 1st July 2026, coinciding with Digital India Day.
The initiative does not promote a rejection of technology. On the contrary, digital literacy is essential in today’s connected world. Technology has revolutionized education, research, communication, and access to information. However, the challenge encourages participants to pause and reflect on an important question:
Are we using technology mindfully, or is technology using our time?
The Digital Detox Challenge invites participants to voluntarily step away from social media and other non-essential digital distractions for a few hours and engage in meaningful offline activities. It is an opportunity to understand one’s own digital habits and discover how much time can be reclaimed when screens take a temporary back seat.
Participants may choose to read a physical book, visit a nearby library, spend quality time with family and friends, pursue a hobby, practice yoga or exercise, take a walk in nature, or simply reflect on personal goals. These simple activities often get overlooked in our busy digital lives, yet they contribute significantly to our well-being, creativity, and sense of balance.
An important component of the initiative will be a follow-up survey that seeks to understand participants’ experiences during the challenge. The survey will explore how long participants were able to stay away from non-essential digital platforms, what activities they engaged in, and how the experience influenced their awareness of screen-time habits. The findings will provide valuable insights into contemporary digital behaviour and encourage greater mindfulness in the use of technology.
The challenge is ultimately about self-discovery rather than restriction. It is about understanding our strengths, becoming aware of our habits, and recognizing that even a few hours away from screens can create space for reflection, learning, and genuine human connection.
As we celebrate National Reading Month, let us remember that while technology continues to evolve, the value of reading remains timeless. Books have the unique ability to inform, inspire, challenge, and transform us. They invite us to pause, think, imagine, and grow.
Perhaps the greatest gift we can give ourselves in today’s fast-paced world is a little uninterrupted time to read, to reflect, and to reconnect with what truly matters.
Why not make the Digital Detox Challenge a family activity?
Gather your family members, switch off your screens for a while, and spend quality time reading, talking, playing, and reconnecting with one another. Once you complete the challenge, share your experience by filling out the feedback form and receive a Certificate of Participation as a token of your commitment to healthier digital habits.
