The inaugural edition of the DB Bandodkar Panjim Gymkhana Open 2024 tennis tournament got underway at Panjim Gymkhana courts on Monday. Part of this week-long state ranking tournament under the aegis of Goa State Tennis Association, will also be staged at Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias at Miramar. Over 140 players are participating in the tournament.
The opening day’s action witnessed men’s singles and age-group ties. Kedar Tari beat Rajesh Bundela 6-3; Jai Gill defeated Krishna Volvoikar 7-5 in an evenly-contested match; while Sreenath Srinivasan vanquished Jason Pereira 6-0 in men’s singles event. In the girls under-14 event, Sofia Sanchez defeated Devyani Desai 7-5; Naimah Sharma routed Renee de Menezes 6-0; Saanj Kunde defeated Neeraja Damle 6-2.
The tournament, which is set to be an annual affair, was declared open in the presence of former India No 2 tennis player Natasha Palha Soares, Gaurish Dhond, vice-president Panjim Gymkhana; Rajesh Khaunte, honorary secretary of Panjim Gymkhana; Tanmay Kholkar, secretary, Clube Gasper Dias; Sameer Kakodkar, vice-president Goa State Tennis Association (GSTA), along with other members of the Panjim Gymkhana managing committee.
