PANAJI: Sportsweek CC Margao beat Rudreshwar Panaji by one wicket in the opening match of 39th Nanda Lolayekar Trophy cricket tournament organised by Mashem Cricket Club, Canacona.
Batting first, the Sportsweek bowlers bowled a steady line and length and bowled out Rudreshwar for a paltry 133 in 31 overs. Smitesh Verekar (27), Jayant Mudras (32) and Pundalik Naik ( 21) were the main contributors. Omprakash Lenka was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 20 for Sportsweek. Amey Kossambe and Anish Mhaddolkar also picked two wickets each.
Chasing 134 in 35 overs, Agildas Alambatta (31) and Tushar Kudnekar (37) gave a flying start to Sportsweek. However, the rest of the batsmen made heavy weather of the chase after reaching a comfortable stage of 91/2 in 15 overs. Wickets fell in a heap thereafter.
Needing 14 runs, last batsman Pralav Kerkar (2 n.o) and skipper Vassudev Kundaikar (14 n.o) kept a cool head and reached the target in 19.1 overs. Dipanshu Sharma was the wrecker- in – chief for Rudreshwar with 5 wickets to his name.
